How can you protect youself from the sun damage?

The skin can tolerate a certain amount of UV irradiation, with showing damage. When there is reddening, it is already too late.

Especially in sunny regions, it is recommended, to adjust to the behavior of the local population, which means to do siesta during the midday heat, and to remain in the house in the shade and not outside.

If you want to be outside, the best protection is to be in the shade. Even then, because of stray light there can be a certain stress for the skin, of course a significantly reduced one.

Clothes that cover the skin surface provide a similar effect. We recommend airy scarves, sun and straw hats and of course sun glasses. Water, for example, while swimming, reduces the UV load only by 10 %.

Unprotected skin areas that are exposed to the sun should be protected by a sun protection creme or lotion. In children in the first year of life who should not be exposed to the sun anyway, sun protection preparations with medical filter substances are advisable. Later preparations with preservatives can be used as filter.

It is important that the sun protection preparations are applied 30 minutes before the first solar irradiation of the day.At the same time, especially so called “sun terraces” of the face such as nose, ears and a lower lip should not be forgotten.

Best of all, chose sun protection preparations with as high LSF as possible, according to the new norm they are pointed out with LSF 50 +should be applied.

LSF is an abbreviation for light protection factor.


What does a LSF 5 mean?

If a very sensitive person can remain in the sun only for 5 minutes before reddening appears, after applying an LSF 5 he can do it for about 25 minutes. The reddening shows that the damage, which should have been prevented, has occured.
For this reason, we recommend to always select the highest LSF possible, in order to avoid overstepping a critical level. In addition to that, 25 minutes are a little too short to eat an ice-creme in the sun, isn’t it?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend the possible time for irradiation by repeated application of a low light protection factor.
