Operative lymphoedema and lipoedema therapy
The surgical treatment of chronic lymphoedemas and lipoedemas is a new branch of medicine.
Lipoedemas are inherited disorders in fat distribution and fat metabolism, which get worse or lead to severe disabilities and impairments of movement with advancing age. Arms and legs are very often affected simultaneously. Lymphoedemas often appear as a result of lymphatic obstruction, after surgeries, in the case of tumours or scarring. Up until a few years ago it was considered a dogma that a careful decongestion can be achieved through lymph drainages, massages, constant compression, as well as protection of the parts of the body affected and avoidance of every injury. According to the latest research findings, removing of the fat tissue changed due to accumulation of proteoglycan leads to a dramatic improvement of the body form and mobility of the arm or leg affected. The measures are very much similar to vibration-assisted liposuction, a proven method for body shape modelling, which has already been applied for years with overwhelming success. According to the protocol of Prof. Corneli, the subcutaneous fat tissue is saturated by the slight sedation analgesia together with tumescent local anaesthesia and then suctioned by means of vibration. Accompanying lymph therapeutic and compression measures are very important for the initial postoperative period. A great number of patients treated in this way are free from complaints later, and many of them observe considerable improvements. |
