We would like to avoid ugly scars, looking like broad step-ladders on the skin. To improve the result of wound healing, we apply a new suturing technique. It has become possible due to the development of modern synthetic suture material, which can dissolve within the skin. In our practice a large part of sutures are placed, so to say, under the skin surface to make sure the suture material is invisible from the outside. If it is favourable for the cosmetic result, it is sometimes necessary to place additional, conventional, very fine sutures onto the skin surface. These should be then removed after a week.
Advantages of the new suturing technique:
- There are no usual scars looking like step-ladders later.
- The scars do not widen the way they usually do. - The bandage can be removed already after 7 days. - After 7 days it is already allowed to soak the wound. - The painful removing of surgical threads is mostly unnecessary. However, the following should be noted:
The surgical thread remains within the skin and dissolves completely only after a year. The thread provides the scar with additional stability for a long time and prevents the otherwise inevitable spreading of the wound edges. The resulting temporary bulging in the scar recedes within a year.
With 5 % of all sutures it can happen that the threads from the deep inside can work their way towards the skin surface. This can be detected through palpation or, possibly, through slight inflammatory reactions. Should this be the case, do not hesitate to contact us immediately. We will remove the remaining thread with a special fine instrument. In the majority of cases, there is no cosmetic impairment to be expected.
The bandage covers the wound for 5-7 days. Under the bandage there is a special steristrip placed to prevent the shifting of the wound edges. It should be removed in the direction of incision, due to the fact that the wound would not heal the right way in the case of improper removal. If you are unable to do it yourself, it can be done by your family doctor. In this regard, you may certainly contact us.
Sometimes in order to achieve especially beautiful sutures, it is necessary to make additional use of threads with fine surface, which should be pulled. The following periods of time apply, depending on the body region:
- Face after 7 days
- Hairy head, body, arms, legs after 14 days
- Hands, feet after 21 days.
All removed tissue will be examined in special laboratories and, therefore, sent in. As usual, we will have the result in between 9 and 14 days.
Our many years of experience with thousands of patients show that the advantages of this modern suturing technique greatly overweigh the above-mentioned disadvantages, occurring only in some cases.
Wound care:
For undisturbed wound healing please keep the wounds clean until they are completely healed (until about 3 weeks). You should avoid strong mechanical strain!
General information on scars:
To achieve a cosmetically beautiful result and avoid bulging at the edges of the suture, the round and oval lesions are removed in a spindle- or shuttle-shaped manner. This makes the suture three times as long as the diameter of the removed lesion.
Scarring can never be avoided! Our aim is to make the scar optically inconspicuous. Sutures heal according to the predisposition (connective tissue weakness, formation of bulgy scars) and the position of the scar.
Scars can bulge temporarily. A slight “pressure massage” (it is more pressure than massage not to irritate the scar) applied several times a day can often be of help here.
A scar can be evaluated not earlier than after six months.
Improvements are possible in the period of up to two years!
Protect your scar from sun exposure for 6 months.
Please do not drive yourself after the operation, let somebody pick you up.
We apply a special waterproof plaster for the body. So you can take a shower, but not a bath. After the surgery you should take care of your skin, please refrain from physical strain, gymnastics, sports, massage, fango.
