Eyelid lifting

Can an eyelid lifting (technically referred to as blepharoplasty) be also performed on an outpatient basis?
Yes, an eyelid lifting is normally performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis, by request and in the case of intervention on lower eyelids general anesthesia is possible. As a rule, the patient leaves the clinic on the same day. If patients come from far away, or there are other technical reasons an inpatient stay is possible.

Do visible scars remain after an eyelid lifting?
The skin of the under lids has especially high healing capacity. For the stitches, an especially thin thread is used. Since the incisions are made along the lower border of the eyelid, to be more precise within the eyelid crease on the upper eyelid, the scars are almost no longer visible after a few months. The transconjunctival blepharoplasty- as an alternative for the lifting of eyelids – completely eliminates the problem of visible scars. Fat pads are avoided via an eyelid internal side. At the same time, no excess skin will be removed. It is recommended to clarify with the specialist in a detailed conversation whether the result that can be achieved match your own ideas. In the case of an eyelid lifting with the help of a surgical laser a highly precise incision making by means of a carbon dioxide laser or a radio waves surgery is applied.

Will also the wrinkles on the sides of the eyes be removed?
Blepharoplasty is limited to the lifting of the skin wrinkles in the area of the eyelids. The treatment of eye wrinkles on the sides of the eyes, so called craw-feet is is performed with the help of face lifting laser wrinkles removal (laser lifting) or botox.

Is there any danger of serious complications after an eyelid lifting?
The most serious complication could be getting blind after the intervention. This is only a possible because of blood collection in the area of optic nerve, which can develop on the other side of the eyeball. The swelling can press onto the optic nerve, and damage it irreparably as long as the danger is not recognised early enough, and a collection of blood is removed. In order to minimise the risk, the patient remains under a precise supervision.
How long does a healing phase last?
Swellings and bruises usually disappear one week after the treatment.

When can I put make up again?
After a period of only several days, it is possible to start applying make up again.

What can be done to optimise the result after eyelids lifting?
Especially after lifting of lower eyelids, it is recommended to start doing a light pressing massage approximately two weeks after the intervention. The patient massages along the incision lightly pressing with the finger to the scar, each time for approximately 30 seconds. The massage should be stopped if pain appears. In the most cases, light swelling appears after each massage. This is normal and should be treated with a cool overlay afterwards. The massage should be done daily for 1-2 months. It helps to achieve an optimised, soft and smoother scar formation. As long as the scar can no longer be felt during palpation and it is no longer reddish, the treatment is no longer needed.
